creative coffee table ideas for the thrifty shopper

As the garbage of a treasure hunter, I always look for a cheap thing from the garbage of others, I can turn it into a treasure, my recent search is a coffee table.
I am currently looking for something that is fully functional, stylish but cost effective.

Currently I live in a bungalow style house but I have a dark brown leather sofa in my family room as I have two little boys and it is a practical option.
When an accident occurs on the sofa, they are easily erased.
Currently in the family room we have an oversized square leather top coffee table which is very practical.
However, since all my furniture is dark leather and the style I\'m looking for is more like a cabin, I\'m looking for something that is slightly lighter in color and less bulky.
I need something that can add a little color to the room, but it has to be practical for two young children.
In addition to supporting the feet and relaxing, we also hope that our coffee table can be used for dinner while watching TV.
